THE SEASON OF EASTER CONTINUES
The Easter Season, also known as the Great Fifty Days, began at sunset Easter Eve and continues through the Day of Pentecost, May 19. The season focuses on Christ’s resurrection and ascension and on the givings of the Holy Spirit. We are in the Season of Easter, we are people of Easter, of the Risen Christ! So we rejoice and celebrate! And we share with others the spirit of love that Jesus demonstrated and still demonstrates through us.
The Easter Season is best celebrated in community with others. Others who are searching to experience hope, joy, peace and love that only Jesus Christ can bring us. I encourage you to join us during this Easter Season to rejoice and to share the love of Jesus Christ! For Christ is risen! He is risen indeed!
THE SEASON OF LENT
Lent is a period of 40 days before Easter (excluding Sundays) in which we are to prepare for the coming of Easter. Ash Wednesday is the beginning of Lent. Lent was authorized by the First Council of Nicaea in 325 CE. Then it was a time of preparation for new converts or for those wanting to be restored in the church on Easter Sunday. It included the practice of applying dust and ashes accompanied by fasting from meals.
Lent is a season of preparation, self-reflection and repentance when we seek to literally “turn around”. We seek to return our lives and focus toward God. It’s a time to rid ourselves of earthly distractions and our own selfish desires. By doing so, we seek to live and love as more faithful disciples of Jesus Christ. To become more faithful in our discipleship we have to be intentional. Being intentional during Lent helps us enter fully into the transforming possibilities found through Easter.
So let us embrace the Resurrected One, Jesus Christ, with a whole and longing heart as we return our lives and focus toward God. May we seek to trust God. And may we live and love as more faithful disciples of Jesus Christ in this Lenten season.
WEDNESDAY, FEB. 14 - ASH WEDNESDAY
Ash Wednesday is the beginning of the Lenten season. Lent is a period of 40 days before Easter (excluding Sundays) in which we are to prepare for the coming of Easter. Usually we have an Ash Wednesday service where ashes are applied to our forehead in the shape of a cross. These ashes become a sign of our mortality, and our confession and repentance of sin. And it is a sign of turning our focus back to God.
Come join us for Ash Wednesday reflection services at Parkview UMC at noon and 6:00 p.m.

SUNDAY, JAN 21 - "FOLLOW ME"
From the Gospel of Mark 1:14-20 we hear Jesus call the fishermen Simon, Andrew, James and John to follow him. "Follow me and I will make you fish for people." Jesus had come to Galilee proclaiming the good news of God, and saying, "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the good news."
Jesus says, “Follow Me” to us again today. And Jesus expects an active response. We are called to repent of our sins, to turn towards our God, and to continue growing in our relationship with Christ. And very importantly we are called to share that relationship with others. We are called to action.

SUNDAY, JAN. 14 - REAFFIRMATION OF YOUR BAPTISM
Baptism is the outward and visible sign of the inward and spiritual grace of God’s work of love in our lives. Our baptism claims us as God’s own children and is usually recognized as the beginning point of our spiritual journey. Water provides the central symbolism for baptism. The use of water signifies our cleansing from sins, death to our old lives and rising to begin new life in Christ. The water of baptism can be administered by sprinkling, pouring or immersion. Many have been baptized as a baby or young person but ask if they should be rebaptized. The United Methodist Church believes that baptism is a once and for all time act of God’s grace, whether we remember it or not. To rebaptize would be to deny the way God’s grace has been working in our lives already. So to remember our baptism and rededicate ourselves to God we reaffirm our baptism.
On Sunday, Jan. 14 our morning worship service will include a “Reaffirmation of the Baptismal Covenant” in which everyone is invited to recommit themselves to their baptismal vows. If you have not been baptized we would invite you to make a commitment to God during this service. Join us on Sunday, Jan. 14 as we remember our baptism and give thanks!

EPIPHANY SUNDAY, JAN. 7, 2024
WHAT IS EPIPHANY?
Epiphany is an even more ancient celebration among Christians than Christmas. The celebration originally focused on the nativity, incarnation and baptism of Christ. The word "epiphany," is taken from the Greek word epiphania, meaning appearance or manifestation. Epiphany means “the light shines forth” or “the light is made manifest.” The season of Epiphany follows the Season of Advent and Christmas to remind us of the wonder that God became flesh in a unique and powerful way that was experienced by others. Today we celebrate the coming of the three wise men (magi) who brought gifts to the Christ child. The Messiah has come!

Happy New Year!
The Lord bless you and keep you;
the Lord make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you;
the Lord lift up his countenance upon you, and give you peace.

BIG PRAYER WEDNESDAY GOES LIVE!
Big Prayer Wednesday (BPW) is live and in person every Wednesday in December at noon in the Parkview sanctuary. Currently a BPW reminder text is sent to 40 people at noon each Wednesday to stop and pray. If you would like to receive a text let Shari know. But now in December you can also come to the Parkview sanctuary to pray!
BPW was started in 2017 in response to a Sunday worship service message entitled Emergency Sirens Are Sounding. The emergency felt in 2017 is even more prevalent now: hate, violence, fear, hunger, loneliness, health, other issues and life storms that rage around us daily. We need BIG (Belief In God) prayers in response to these issues and to make sure our relationship with Christ is strong so Christ can work through us to help others.
The sanctuary will be open from Noon to 12:30 pm every Wednesday in December. This is an opportunity for quiet time in prayer with God. Come as you can, light a prayer candle, stay as long as you need. Pastor Shari and others will be present to pray with you if needed. Please join us on Wednesday the 6th, 13th, 20th, and 27th for Big Prayer Wednesday!
CAN YOU FIND THE HIDDEN TWO WHITE DOVES?
An Advent/Christmas scavenger hunt is ongoing at Parkview. Each week new items representing the Advent and Christmas Season are hidden around Parkview church. A list of hidden items is provided in Sunday worship and new hidden items are added every Sunday in December.
DECEMBER CELEBRATION SUNDAY – DECEMBER 24
10:50 a.m. - Special Worship Service as we celebrate the birth of Jesus. Young adults and children will lead the worship service. Birthday cake will be served in Fellowship Hall after worship as we say Happy Birthday to Jesus!

Can you see the new lines in the parking lot? Thanks so much to Seth, Emiliano, Trenton, and Dallas for their work in cleaning and repainting lines in our parking area. They were also kind enough to complete other small projects around the church grounds. The team, all seniors at Benton High School, chose to help Parkview UMC for their EAST project. EAST stands for Education Accelerated by Service and Technology. Thanks again! |
GRANDPARENTS CELEBRATION SUNDAY - SUNDAY, SEPT. 10, 2023
I was blessed to have grandparents and great grandparents active in my life. They were good people who loved me. From each I learned something different about life. They helped me become the child of God that I am today. Many of my friends did not have this extra layer of love in their family, for many reasons. So I am grateful for my grandparents and my great grandparents!
On Sunday, Sept. 10 we will celebrate Grandparents Day in worship. The service will be led by grandparents, their grandchildren and great grandchildren. After service we will have a meal prepared by Dan Berry. All are invited to attend as we are all children of God and part of a bigger family of faith known as Parkview UMC!
I encourage you to join us on Grandparents Day. You and your grandchild, or your great grandchildren! Or bring your grandparent! Invite the whole family! Or maybe bring that person in your life with whom you have that loving relationship found between grandparents and grandchildren. We all have someone in our lives that have helped make us the children of God that we are now. So let’s celebrate together the love of these people in our lives and the love of our God!
A Prayer Of Healing For This Day - Tuesday, July 11, 2023
Thank you, Lord,, for your love and grace and your many blessings. Today, we pray specifically for healing of each person reading this prayer. Not just for physical healing, but mental and emotional and spiritual healing. We pray for healing in our families, our church, our nation and world. This healing seems impossible to us, but in your power mighty things are possible.
We ask that you empower us. And that you guide and direct us to those to whom we can be a touch of your healing power. In your name we pray, Amen.
Christ is risen! He is risen indeed!
We greet Easter in this way, with the Good News that Jesus Christ is not defeated by the powers of evil and death. This greeting reminds us that’s God’s action in raising Jesus is the bottom line of our faith.

OUR LENTEN CHALLENGE - LIVING IN THE SPIRIT OF LOVE
I CHALLENGE YOU! During Lent I challenge you to join me in reading 1 Corinthians 13 once a week. In this short chapter, Paul defines what real love is. If we read and meditate and listen to God through these verses I believe our individual lives and our congregational lives will change as we live in the spirit of love.
